It is estimated that only 4 percent of all work-related accidents
are caused by technical issues such as faulty equipment. Establishing
and maintaining a safe work environment can therefore significantly
reduce up to 96 percent of all work-related accidents. Important
pre-injury activities include:
- Promoting safety awareness
- Ensuring that those operating power equipment or handling hazardous
materials have received all appropriate training
- Including health and safety concerns in performance evaluations
- Promoting attendance at training
- Seeking input regarding health and safety concerns
- Evaluating work areas when health and safety concerns arise
- Taking corrective action when established safety procedures
are not followed
